Let's just be clear about one thing. These first three issues all happen in a matter of hours during the same night! They've already walked miles into town after dark (issue #2) while fighting off zombies. Then, they spend a little over an hour (going by the clock time-lapse in this issue) for their research, putting it at after midnight. Adrenaline and nerves may have got them to the library, but the research should have let their bodies come down off that. Why aren't they tired? Why don't they think it's a good idea to try to sleep at the library!? I know they've walked several more miles to leave town for the new destination, but why do they then decide it's a good idea to try to sleep outside, halfway to the horror house? I'm not surprised none of them could sleep out there, but I'm annoyed at the progression that got them there. It seems like the writer needed to have the kids talk about Peyton's parents, and, for some reason, they couldn't have done it at the library when the topic initially came up.
I'm actually glad they worked in the Zomboy Scouts; it helps balance out the Ghoul Scouts name here. We don't really know anything about it other than the one adult we've met was in it (and mentally zones out when asked about it), and another girl from that group was mentioned in a newspaper article as the museum curator for a haunted magic exhibit. On that note, I love that there are three articles for us to read in the paper, and that they actually have good and potentially relevant information. I read this as a review PDF, so I'm not sure how hard it will be to read that tiny print in person, but it's worth it, even if you need a magnifying glass. The articles do make me wonder why anyone is surprised there's a zombie attack given all the other strange "horror" happenings in "America's Paranormal Capital" (as the sign says as the kids leave town). The other stuff is all within one generation, so it's not even that old! But maybe there's a reason the one adult can't seem to remember anything ...
This issue has action and plot and character development, which is great. I do like the peek we get into the kids' personal lives and their maturity. I like how the experience has already made them closer as friends in just a few hours, and that they are nothing but supportive to each other (even when one of the guys gets a little emotional -- and I'm glad the creators wern't afraid to have the "tough" guy show some real emotion). The issue closes with a few pages about how it's made, which is great for those interested in making their own comics. I like that they have characters from this story provide that information.
