ISBN: 9781421587233 Grade: 7 7thGARDEN Volume 3 (which has a January 3, 2017 release date), is a dark, twisted volume. The volume has a super grim first few pages which set the stage for the rest of the events to come inside. Awyn and Vyrde are back, however each have their own agendas to follow on their return to their household.
As a first time reader of this series, this story was unexpectedly dark. The cover is white with an angel on the cover, so one would think the inside of the book would be kind of pristine, but ... no, totally the opposite! It is not as dark and bloody as Battle Royale, but it has its moments.
While reading 7thGARDEN, some knowledge of higher angels and some gods may aid with understanding the angel's names and why the act the way they do. The reader gets to meet some of the angels and demons head on in this volume, and watch them receive a strange and brave request from one of the 7thGARDEN main characters.
I was impressed by the direction this volume was taking. Expecting one character to act and behave a certain way and have them switch things up on you is always fun. This series is unexpectedly dark and surprising after becoming used to Shonen Jump's other, fluffier releases.
The art and characters are spot-on in this series. There are some random fan service bits. The rating is correct on the book for "older teen" with violence and a bit of nudity. The story seems to have a lot of "read between the lines" moments, which are nice and as far as I can tell, were translated well from Japanese.
If you are after a darker surprise, pick this series up.
