It's almost time for Lupe's quinceañera, and she's torn between fearing her life after will go back to being boring, and that it will never be the same. Little does she know just how profoundly her life will change -- it's not every day you wake up with new abilities ....

This digital comic, which will be 15 issues, is available in both English and Spanish versions (I'm reviewing the English version), and will be available as a trade paperback in English once completed, in October.

I love the artwork! It has a very animated feel. Lupe's dialogue really brings her to life, and her sense of being overlooked by her peers is portrayed very relatably. While there is a lot of exposition, it's done engagingly. We get to know her family a bit in this issue, and it's very sweet -- especially the relationship between her and her abuela.

There's not really any info given about what a quinceañera is, but even though what I knew going in was minimal (a Mexican girl's 15th birthday, a coming-of-age celebration), I actually appreciate that the comic treats the audience like we all know what it is, doesn't baby those outside of the culture. It encourages those outside it to learn more, in-depth, on their own, rather than wasting precious page space on an explanation.

My only complaint is that it's very short -- only 8 pages! (Well, it is only 99 cents ….) And with the large art and text, the issue seems even shorter! I can appreciate wanting to leave the issue with its cliffhanger, but I think the first two pages could have been made into one, and thus another scene could have been included -- maybe something more illustrative about her school life, something more showing than telling.

It's off to a promising start -- I look forward to seeing where it goes!
