Credits Writer: Hope Larson Penciler: Brittney Williams Inker: Brittney Williams Colorist: Sarah Stern Letterer: Jim Campbell Cover Artist: Brittney Williams Grade: 8 Goldie and Walter realize the mystery woman had the bends. Goldie and her mom find more clues that suggest a secret, underwater Naval base. Goldie follows up on her own, confirming there is a base.
I like that this issue opens with a bit of science, and shows us that Goldie is knowledgeable as well as clever. I am glad to see Walter and the FBI lady going beyond flirting, especially since Goldie pushes that along partially so she can go off on her own. I love that her mom helps her! I also like that Goldie has to bargain with her mom -- help with detective sleuthing for some chores and competing with her mom in a mer-family competition. Goldie's reaction to this request and how she agrees by saying what tail color she wants is wonderful with hilarious expressions.
The underwater Naval base adds a fantasy aspect to this story like the spy portion did to the first arc. It's a very intriguing plot twist, and I'm excited to see where it goes. I enjoy seeing Goldie gathering clues, even if what she's doing involves breaking the law. It's interesting that her mom condones and helps with one part of it, but none of these things are harmful. Mostly, it's a bit of plot convenience for the cozy mystery feel. When she breaks into one man's house, the clues she sees add a sinister feel to things moving forward, especially with the knife in the NASA letter, and all the papers and pictures taped to the wall.
This is ratcheting up quite nicely.
