Credits Writer: Paul Jenkins Penciler: Humberto Ramos Inker: Humberto Ramos Colorist: Leonardo Olea Letterer: Jim Campbell Cover Artist: Humberto Ramos and Leonardo Olea Grade: 9 Red and Woof get help from the Mapmaker, Mister Anderson. They see what happens to stories that are forgotten, and they are told the dangers of following the yellow brick road to Realworld -- including that all women cannot be trusted! They are attacked immediately upon entering Oz.
This is an excellent second issue! It broadens the scope of the world in two major ways, and sets the main characters more directly on their quest. I love stories that include Wonderland and / or Oz, but at the same time, this should have had plenty of fodder to work with in just the Grimm-verse. Still, as Red and Woof are seeking Realworld, it makes sense that all such fairy tale stories would be linked somehow, and I love the idea of the Witches and Queens being at war. I appreciate the reasoning behind why all women can't be trusted, as well as the warning to Red and Woof that Realworld may not have what they want.
I like that it takes a few panels to tell us part of a forgotten fairy tale. I wish it would have completed it, too, but leaving off where it did further emphasizes that it's been forgotten, especially with the reactions of the main characters from that story. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to call the Mapmaker "Mister Anderson", and it made me think of Agent Smith from The Matrix despite having no obvious relation to that. I appreciate Woof's skepticism and distrust -- it will help keep them safe -- but I'm glad some things are up to Red, as it keeps things moving ... even if that's knowingly into dangerous territory.
I love how the Mapmaker fools Grimm, and I like that Grimm has limits when it comes to the areas the Mapmaker looks after and story areas like Wonderland and Oz. Grimm is frightful and controlling in his own realm, but he's not the only danger out there. I do wonder if he'll still pursue Red and Woof, and, if so, what he'll do in places where he isn't the ruler. He has an army at his command, and his efforts to pursue Red and Woof in this issue and the previous were more than overkill.
The flying monkey action scene is excellent. "Monkeys" includes at gorillas as well, which is always more intimidating, and I know I saw one with a devil-point tail. The use of a tornado is a nice extra, and the blue coloring in this section really sets the mood.
I'm looking forward to issue #3, and, so far, I'd say fans of fairy tales should definitely check this out!
