Orla witnessed something as a child. Now she draws everything she sees, as a way of keeping tabs on the creatures.

I'm always interested in stories that take on mythologies (in this case, Irish ones). This first issue is mostly a lot of set-up, with the childhood scene and the cliffhanger as the only parts that hint at the monstrosity Orla and her family face. We don't have a lot to go on, but I'm intrigued by the human component. Whether it's possibly beings taking on the forms of humans, or using humans to do something for them, Orla and her grandmother seem to be rather alone in their knowledge and sight. The timeline skips around a fair amount, but it's still easy to follow as it fits the puzzle pieces together to show us the image.

The art is dark realism -- lots of lines and shadows on everything, from faces to clothes to surroundings. The coloring is fantastic and really helps set the mood. Most of it is dark, with heavy colors, which makes the forest scene stand out even more with its light greens.

A supernatural story with violence (and high school bullying), targeted to teenagers or older. There's not enough here for me to make a call on the series, but if you like stories like this, it's a solid first issue.
