Credits Writer: Zack Kaplan Penciler: Giovanni Timpano Inker: Giovanni Timpano Colorist: Betsy Gonia and Chris Northrop Letterer: Troy Peteri Grade: 7 In the future, sunlight will instantly burn you alive, so people live underground and only come to the surface at night ... unless they're wearing an Iceman suit. Workers that keep certain things functioning wear them, and one has gone AWOL. And somehow, someone has stayed on the surface long enough after dawn to murder someone and watch the burn.
I love this issue. I want more. I read through the first page, saw them closing the doors after going underground, and had to pause and go back to the first panel. Stop and appreciate the first panel! So much in that one image! It alone sets a rather complete scene of the world. Using Time Square was genius -- the night versus day shots are so telling. This issue also gives us a peek at how people live, including what money buys in this new setting. It's fascinating and different. The panels are full of details without seeming cluttered.
The sun's effects, even when reflected off another surface, are horrible and realistic. The instant-blister and melting combo creates a horrifying visual and death for these characters. The realism in the art and character designs makes this even better because it's easier to envision it really happening one day. Plus, it gives it just a touch of grittiness that fits the setting. The Iceman suits are interesting; we're given a brief explanation and they sound like reverse space suits. Quite clever. I was surprised, however, that they have clear faces rather than being fully enclosed. They must have some kind of sun protection, but there's no shading to them. The comic has an examination of the art at the end by the writer and artist, which is insightful and interesting -- especially for those interested in creating comics.
Bax seems to be the best Iceman, with the most time in-suit and above ground. This makes him perfect for the story set in this world where the daughter of a solar power mogul is targeted by the mysterious murderer who can stay above ground and quotes Bible verses. Some of that sounds a bit trite, but I'm hoping the unique setting and circumstances will allow the story and characters to follow a more creative path.
I will definitely check out issue #2.
