Credits Grade: 8 Nachi and Aoi's pasts are intertwined. Nachi finds a way into Momochi House and tries to make Aoi / Nue his shikigami.I was spot-on to be suspicious of Nachi in the previous volume. What he does in this volume, and what he did to Aoi in the past, are awful things. However, I love how it answers so many questions about Aoi's past, including how he came to be at Momochi House. I also love the comparison Nachi makes between himself and Aoi, and how Aoi is not only able to show how they're more different than alike, but he's able to feel sorry for Nachi. The events in this volume happen in a short window of time and progress quickly, though the main conflict is appropriately drawn out; it's good pacing. The flashbacks are nicely placed to maximize the reveal of layers of memory and pieces to the puzzle. I was glad to see Aoi struggling with his decision to reject Himari's romantic love; he clearly regrets it, which is a nice build to the kiss scene. I appreciate that the kiss scene was only partially romantic. I was glad Himari wasn't really angry about it (as it was done without her consent) because it was done to protect her (and she's aware that Aoi is not sure about his prior decision). It's nicely handled. I especially like how Nue asks her about it afterward and her response that it's "not fair" for him to ask in that form (I assume because Nue is so beautiful). I loved seeing the tengu, though I was sad to see them bound as servants, given the specific circumstances (including their blindfolds). The art in some panels really makes the scenes pop though some well-done body mechanics, especially for Aoi, Nue, and Himari. There's a beautiful gallery at the end of the volume as well. It's an eye-opening volume with some incredible twists at the end. Written: March 7, 2017
