Osta Vazilek comes looking for Connor MacCleod in 1985 to talk about the Gathering. Flashback to when they met, and when MacCleod met John Hooke.

For those unfamiliar with the Highlander franchise, MacCleod is one of the immortals, all fighting (and beheading each other to kill for good and transfer the power stored in one immortal to another) till there's only one. The Gathering is a subconscious force that drives the immortals together.

Fans of the franchise (and especially the original movie) will enjoy this comic, as it definitely has the right look and feel. Connor is modeled on Christopher Lambert (who played him in the movie), but other characters may be unique, since this story chronicles the events leading up to the 1986 movie. A prequel series for this franchise can be trickier than one would assume, given all the backstory and flashbacks the franchise uses to fill in said backstory, which goes back hundreds of years!

This first issue does a good job of setting the stage. We're introduced to MacCleod and one of his allies (as much as they can be), Osta. Hooke is set as a villain, and one other villain is mentioned. The flashback lets us see rather than be told that these are the roles they fall into. While there's not a lot of action in this issue, we do witness MacCleod surviving something a mortal would not, and we're introduced to holy ground being a neutral area where the Game cannot take place. The 1985 setting gets things rolling towards the main event: the Gathering. It's a solid first issue, and I'm curious what events will unfold in this prequel.
