Joe and Kate shoot and drive their way through the Verge to the edge before the waking world. Joe touches the barrier, and ....

The issue goes by too fast because it's almost all action. On top of that, it's one action scene involving a car stunt and some major firepower. So it's impressive, but also a short-lived burst of on-page adrenaline. There was so much buildup to the Verge and its dangers, but I was left disappointed at how easily these two get through it. The monsters we see are the stuff of nightmares -- impossibly large and grotesque in unnatural ways. And yet, Joe and Kate have only one specialized weapon; the rest are normal Dream World guns.

The barrier itself, and Joe touching it, should have been a strong cliffhanger. However, the comic continued, to a different cliffhanger-ish point that pales in comparison to the edge-of-my-seat feeling I had with Joe touching the barrier. So, this too is disappointing and over too soon, even while it's enlightening.

This issue will read better within a TPB, but stand-alone it leaves me feeling like it was almost money wasted.
