Osta and Connor MacCleod take on Hooke in 1863, chasing him off with a wound that will never heal completely. In 1985 Osta and MacCleod discuss Kurgan and Hooke as threats, and how Kurgan and Hooke are different from each other. They think back (flashback style) to 1955, when Osta and MacCleod met at a wrestling match to talk about Hooke still being a dangerous threat, to more than just immortals.

This issue wraps up the flashback to 1863, during which we get a good feel for how the three main characters view the Rules and mortal life. This flashback provides the main action scene of this issue, and it does a good job of capturing the type of fighting and wounds of the Civil War (and the mindset of common soldiers under Hooke). The views of these men are built on when the scene shifts to 1985, with Osta and MacCleod voicing concern about the fate of the world depending on who get the Prize.

I appreciate that the flashback to 1955 lets us see how MacCleod has matured to the point of visualizing tomorrow, as well as how Hooke enjoys and revels in killing mortals. The two opposing interactions with humanity illustrate what could be in store for the world if one of these two gets the Prize. This flashback also introduces us briefly to Rachel -- a mortal, important to MacCleod and who may have influenced his world view. The wrestling match is used as a sort of pseudo-fight, but is also used to highlight the different perspectives of Osta and MacCleod.

A solid second issue. It handles the flashbacks that are core to this series very well. My main complaint is how little seems to actually happen or transpire in this issue; it was more (albeit necessary) stage-setting.
