Credits Writer: Daniel Warren Johnson Penciler: Daniel Warren Johnson Inker: Daniel Warren Johnson Colorist: Mike Spicer Letterer: Rus Wooten Cover Artist: Daniel Warren Johnson and Mike Spicer Grade: 8 The Paznina attacked, and Thea's world changed. She struggles to figure out who she is now that her right hand has been cut off and she's unable to draw, and her family leads the resistance against the Paznina.
This is not an easy story to read, and I appreciate the page at the end from the creator about how it wasn't an easy story to write. It's raw and emotional and plays on visceral fears, especially for artists. It's a revenge story, but it's also a personal story -- a personal journey. Thea is the driving force, and I'm curious to see how she'll continue to handle her daily personal struggle regarding her hand and her art, as well as potentially stepping into a leadership position for her people.
Thea's brother, Rollo, doesn't have the stomach for it despite their father's encouragement. I'm not surprised, since it seems Rollo wasn't there when Thea lost her hand and their mother was killed; it's like he's detached from what happened to his family. He even has trouble rallying with the others of their people. It's more that he's kind-hearted than a pacifist, but it paints him as weak, given what's going on. On the upside, at the end of the issue, I was actually a little proud of him standing his ground. His words to Thea (words that the issue ends on) might be gross curiosity but are probably a touch of wisdom shining through regarding revenge.
Visually, I see inspiration from Avatar: The Last Airbender and (any) Mad Max; it's primitive in many ways, but with some sci-fi technology and post-apocalyptic elements. The design captures the dirty, grimy struggle that is life; there's no easy solution to anything, but there's an ability to survive and fight back.
A solid first issue, and if anything above sounds intriguing, then I'd recommend checking it out.
