Ennay, Bud, and Sal attend a Conferring Party, where a three-year-old gets his god (and the god gets its first beads), with Sal doing the shaping (and Ennay doing the drinking). It's a trap, but help shows up in an unexpected way. Then Ennay and Bud try to hide out in a church, but someone else knows he's there ....

This issue opens with Ennay about to get his groove on in a threesome (the "please no bathroom sex -- mgmt" note taped to the bathroom sign is a nice touch), which continues this series' way of being positive and open without being too adult. I appreciate that he stopped to avoid leaving Sal alone in a very adult atmosphere. However, I'm disappointed that this shifts to him being drunk. The way it's presented, it's hard not to assume that he's drunk because of Sal (as opposed to the job at a Conferring Party). I hope Ennay and Sal come to a better arrangement so he doesn't lose himself while also teaching and protecting her.

The Conferring Party, the mob boss, and the church scene all provide a ton of history about the gods, as well as some interesting context for the way of the world presently. We learn what happens to those who lose their god (when the god becomes beadless); I love that it's not just a simple matter of becoming a Shaper. It is fascinating! The mob boss also provides mystery with regards to his own god ... and the inhuman features on him that we get a glimpse of!

There's an interaction between Bud and Sal that's extremely interesting -- it practically opened a Pandora's Box of mystery on top of all the other new information we have enriching this world. I'm curious if Ennay's reaction is directly due to this (and if so, what that means) or if it's just his hangover.

I am quite happy with the surprise rescuer. Their appearance and curiosity about Bud opens up possibilities for characters and the overall story. The way gods are used to power vehicles is quite interesting as well, and it gives the chase scene a little something different.

The cliffhanger at the church leaves me with so many wonderful questions. I love that the focus has shifted to Bud, though I hope the series doesn't lose the Ennay (or Sal) angle.

Amazing art! Especially with the gods and the chase scene. The unusual color choices work well together and make this stand out even more as visual storytelling.

Godshaper is a must-read.
