MLP: The Movie Prequel is a series providing background on the main (or one of the main) villains from the upcoming theatrical release movie: namely, The Storm King. It's off to a strong start. We get a solid feel for the Storm King (including his goofy side), and his reason for conquest. I really like that he's both evil and silly; it works surprisingly well (and in a much different way than a character like Discord, who is more chaotic than evil even including his past); the diary and pajamas are a nice touch. His views about the negativity of friendship sound like someone who has been hurt in the past (thus, setting him up to be a redeemable villain). It's interesting that the Storm King experiences betrayal in this issue from a place he didn't expect it.
The Storm King's design reminds me quite a bit of Tirek, only a puck instead of a centaur. It makes me curious if there are more creatures like them in this world, especially as the worldview continues to expand and bring in more new species. Strife is visually interesting -- like a mix between a storm could and skull ... with long arms. I love that the pirates are parrots. It's a touch cliché but better, since they are the pirates and not just associated with them. Though I like the black, I'm a little disappointed that the king and queen of Abyssinia don't have the distinctive coat colors of the real Abyssinian cat breed. I love that the queen is not afraid to plead their case to the Storm King and then hiss and spit at him when he turns her down.
The art is fantastic. Wonderful pacing and layout. Excellent line art, really capturing and staying true to the new character designs. Great facial expressions, too.
I'm excited that we get some official background leading up to the movie, and I can't wait to read more.
