Credits Writer: Simon Spurrier Penciler: Jonas Goonface Inker: Jonas Goonface Colorist: Jonas Goonface Letterer: Colin Bell Cover Artist: Jonas Goonface Grade: 8 Ennay gets attached to a ghost god by the woman leading the Church of Small Gods. She uses pain and the promise of a god of his own to manipulate him into agreeing to help attack a famous and "strong god"-wielding persona and her Shaper husband. Meanwhile the two girls and Bud cross paths with Benotti, who tries to use the young Shaper and Bud to do his dirty work.
This series continues to surprise me with the plot twists! Of course, they tease us by not showing us what's under the sheet that allows this woman to attach Ennay to a god. The fact that it's possible to do that and to lay hands on that connection to cause pain or disconnect it is shocking! It's wonderful and terrible all at once. What I'm not surprised by is that it's the Church (or one of them) that is being manipulative and controlling and using any means to get what they want. The Church's hate of no-godly Shapers fits in well with the way this world works. Despite the fantasy setting, it's inspired by a good dose of reality, which, of course, makes it more interesting.
I love the telepathic powers Ennay gave the little god before he was attached to it. I was surprised by how the visual-spying part worked with the detachable eye, but that allowed them to go undetected. Possessing another god to move and speak through it is far more impressive, and it allows for critical interaction with others. The question is, will Bud play along or not?
I don't quite follow what Benotti wants of the young Shaper. I can make a guess, that it's a way of stealing. More importantly, I'm not sure where this angle is going or why it's important to explain to us how things work in this Las Vegas.
There's so many questions I have at this point, which is the result of good writing and pacing. I can't wait for the next issue.
