Makoto Mizuhara stumbles across a strange girl who seems to know him, and she transports him to a very strange world called El-Hazard. He doesn't waste much time getting into trouble there either. After rescuing a young girl from giant bugs, he finds himself the prisoner of two very lovely priestesses. He soon discovers his rival from school, his sister, and a teacher are there as well, and all four of them have changed in some way — Makoto has the same abilities as the Royal Family! When they meet up with Jinnai though, it is not a very nice reunion. El-Hazard seems to be in for one heck of a hazard! And what of the newly-awakened demon?

This first volume is certainly very interesting! There's a lot happening, and it all has an importance, even if it's only hinted at for the time being. There's a wide range of characters that, depite their differences, blend together well within the story. I really like the rivalry between Makoto and Jinnai, especially when Jinnai gets so angry or power-hungry he starts babbling. It's hilarious! I also love Makoto's first incounter with the firey Shayla Shayla — let's just say she gets more than she wants from the interrogation.

The artwork is great! Each of the characters have their own, unique look so there's quite a range. Jinnai, more than any other, has a different style; he really looks like a sly lizard, completely overcome with the desire for power. El-Hazard is the type of story that hooks you with the first story and keeps you enthralled with all that follow. I can't wait to read more of this one!
