ISBN: 978-1-4215-9758-4 Grade: 6 Asuka gets a promotion. Ryu also gets a promotion -- one that sends him to Washington, DC for years. They decide to make the long-distance relationship work by being engaged "in spirit". Will Asuka be able to hold up, especially with friends and Akito questioning how well the two really talked about it and what Asuka really wants?
I shouldn't be surprised. The series really had only a couple of options open to it at the end of the previous volume. So, the manga-ka creates a real challenge for the couple by forcing them into a long-distance relationship, which, statistically, doesn't end well for the couple.
Asuka seems genuinely interested in her job and promotion, so her personal life / dreams / goals are falling tragically by the wayside, especially due to her relationship with Ryu. I am glad that others are getting her to think about what she wants, even if just momentarily. I hope she figures out what she truly wants. The way things were going, I would say that she would be happier with Akito, being his housewife, but now (especially after last volume's revelation from her mom), she may change everything, though I think she'll eventually regret it if she does. I love that this volume ends with us and Asuka's brother seeing how well and how naturally she clicks with Akito. I don't always like Akito's approach / attitude, but he's genuinely interested and concerned for her and what she wants (as well as what he wants).
Ryu gives lip-service to marriage and engagement, which, thankfully, Asuka calls him on. He does do a few things that indicate he's serious about her ... though the biggest one or two, he avoids or sidesteps (marriage / engagement and turning down the promotion to stay in Japan). He also gets advice on this new situation from the woman he had an affair with, who turned him off from marriage to begin with. Ryu's made progress, but it's obvious his number one priority is his job and his own desires, whereas Asuka puts him and their relationship ahead of her own wants and desires. That's not a good foundation for a relationship.
It will be interesting to see where things go from here, but I'm not longer sure where I want it to / hope it will go, which is making me lose interest.
