Credits Writer: Rick Remender Penciler: Bengal Grade: 5 The first page of Death and Glory has two fast food restaurant guys arguing over a girl. When one of them calls her an "ass-licker", I was immediately turned off and considered dropping the comic right then and there. My impression wasn't improved when the two guys get killed by a stranger with a gun that squirts liquid nitrogen, who immediately reminded me of a Constantine knockoff.
The comic is actually about Glory, a woman who grew up off-the-grid with a family of truckers. Glory's father-of-sorts, Red, needs a liver transplant, but can't access traditional treatment. So Glory goes off to steal the money from her ex-boyfriend, a skeezy sort who works with the mob as well as corrupt cops.
Things go south for Glory, but I pretty much didn't care until the last page. While the comic attempts to make trucking lifestyle sound wonderful, it seems to be anything but. The other things about the comic -- the mob, the corrupt cops -- all seemed too over-the-top to me. Whether the creators were going for authenticity or fantasy, it feels like they missed the mark with both.
The artwork looked alright to me, although I was not impressed that the artist chose to do close-up butt shots of nearly every woman in the comic, at the same angle and pose. Nevertheless, I had a lot more issues with the dialogue, which sounded very fake at times, and narration, which seemed overblown, than I did with the art.
No particularly recommended unless you like this particular writer and / or artist.
