Credits Writer: Joe Brusha, Ralph Tedesco, Dave Franchini Penciler: Bong Dazo Inker: Bong Dazo Colorist: Juan Manuel Rodriguez Letterer: Kurt Hathaway Cover Artist: Bong Dazo and Hedwin Zaldivar Grade: 6 This is a weird issue that introduces Patricia Otts, the C.H.I.P. division, and loads of secret stuff that is also destroyed in this issue thanks to Scylla attacking!
The Otts name is clever. The full name for the division is given before the acronym, so I had a second of smiling at the inside joke before it was solidified. Sadly, it comes across as more forced and random since it's introduced and destroyed all in one issue.
Otts herself is a formidable fighter! Most of the action scene is actually her versus Scylla, and it's intense. (There's also the cannon fodder crew and Belle figuring out a way to win the fight). However, I hate that Belle says "pretty bad ass for an older woman". Um, Otts is bad ass for anyone -- man, woman, young, old! It's saying "you fight well ... for a girl", and for another woman, especially one who is a warrior in her own right, to say this is insulting at the least (go figure, it's written by men).
And why is there a too-small boob-cover in the supply case Belle gets later on? It's smaller than the face mask! I mean, the male creative team does know that women's chests are wider than their faces, right? (Honestly, I docked this a grade point on the review for these things because they're important.)
Scylla's design is great! I love that her tentacles are actually sharp-toothed snakes! That alone makes her more formidable and scary, but the fact that she can use them like prehensile tentacles and not just as biting snakes ratchets up the danger and violence. Scylla takes an impressive amount of damage, too, without slowing down!
Belle's best friend, Mel, is introduced, and I'm curious to know more about her. The cliffhanger is a teaser of the party behind the attacks ... and the beast! Now that's a great cliffhanger.
