Credits Grade: 6 Asuka and Ryu struggle with their long-distance relationship. Asuka realizes she's struggling more than he is -- that he's in his element. Her dream of becoming a housewife gets her demoted at work, while Ryu gets an extension overseas, and she turns to Akito for comfort.Well this series got a big helping of unpleasant realism with the long-distance relationship and one person being torn up about it. To make matters worse, Asuka gets the extra negatives of trouble at work and a depressing emptiness at home, while Ryu is socializing with famous people and living it up in the States. I was a bit pleasantly surprised how this volume ended, even though I'm not sure what that means for Asuka or the story moving forward. The work demotion seems rather extreme, but I know enough to realize it's still a part of the real gender-role struggle in Japan. I'm glad the story explains the reasoning, but I'm even gladder that Akito (and a female coworker) stood up for Asuka and her work ethic and dedication to finishing what she starts. I love that Asuka turns to Akito for comfort (of course, I already shipped them), and that they discover they have similar tastes in food. I also like that Kamiya lays into Ryu, and tells Asuka it's because he used to be like that with regard to a long-distance relationship -- so insightful, and it makes me appreciate more how mature Akito is and what a good match he is for Asuka. I'm still a bit ambivalent about this series at this point, and I'm not sure whether I should feel hopeful or nervous about where it goes next. Written: June 23, 2018
