When Thomas and his fellow astronauts land, after going into hypersleep, they find they may not be in the place or time they were intended to be. They meet one group of primitive, human inhabitants -- and then another, civilized group, in a world where it was other apes that evolved, rather than humans. Captured as a primitive and separated from his crew, can Thomas convince the apes that he's as advanced a being as they are?

Let me point out right off that I am not a fan of this franchise, and received this copy unsolicited. And yet, in spite of myself, I enjoyed it pretty well. This beautifully-bound graphic novel tells the story of the Planet of the Apes (based on a French novel) as Rod Serling originally adapted it, and there's definitely a Twilight Zone flavour. Also, rather than living in huts, these apes live in a city, putting them on more even technological footing with the humans they are supposed to be a parallel of. It also helps that Thomas is much more likable than Taylor. Honestly, I don't understand why the filmmakers didn't go with this script! I do wish, though, that the interior art were a bit nicer -- it's fine enough on its own, but compared to the cover art, it's a disappointment. I also wish it were longer -- it feels a bit like a highlights version of the story, jumping around a lot. Still, it's a much better read than I was expecting, giving me a better appreciation for the franchise!
