ISBN: 9781974701025 Grade: 8 It's Christmas -- time to celebrate! Except, even with their birthdays, New Year's, and a wedding going on, Yukio doesn't seem happy, and is asking questions about his late foster father in not-so-great ways. Lightning, too, seems rather hostile during his investigation. What will what they learn about the Knights mean for Suguro and Yukio's families and friends? Also, when a demon attacks, more of the public seem able to see them -- and the more people who see and believe, the stronger a demon becomes! Can Renzo get a strong enough grasp on his own family demon to be of use?
Even with the character guide and summary, I had a bit of a hard time sussing out who was who and what was going on since the other review copy I received (vol. 16), but I eventually got enough of a grip on things to follow things more or less. And even without a solid grasp of who was who, I really enjoyed seeing the characters celebrate the various events -- particularly all the little quiet character moments, both within the big groups and in one-on-one scenarios. I love that this is a very ensemble cast, despite there being a lead -- and that the lead (Rin) practically took a back seat this volume so that others could shine! This seems a very rich, developed world, akin to Fullmetal Alchemist -- one I'd like to know better! (Maybe I could appreciate the bonus content better then.)
