A fan of Dragon Ball dies in a freak accident and wakes up as Yamcha in the world of Dragon Ball. Determined not to suffer Yamcha's original fate, he uses his knowledge of the entire series to become the strongest human, surviving many things this character would not normally have lived through.

The twist that makes this work is absolutely perfect. It fits beautifully within the series (though you do have to be current up through Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods). The twist is what really sold me on this story. I was enjoying it, but it was just a well-played fan story until that turning point. I appreciate that it doesn't change the general outcome of the storyline, even with Yamcha playing a much larger role. I also love that this series isn't afraid to be meta, and knows how to do it well. I mean, what fan hasn't imagined themselves as a character (original or existing)? I know I have. Plus, it's fun getting to see Yamcha get to be a better version of himself, standing as better (for a time) and equal (again, for a time) with the more main characters.

The main story fills most of the volume, but there are also two bonus stories at the end. One is essentially a side-quest-type story that helps this Yamcha accept that Bulma should end up with Vegita. Like the overall story, it is done in a way that works and fits in with the overall story here as well. The other bonus is hilarious and obviously just for fun. The manga-ka also includes two pages of him getting this gig and the process to completion, which is a fun extra.

The art is spot-on, which solidifies this further as a sanctioned work officially part of the Dragon Ball storyverse.

If you're a fan, you definitely need to read this. If you're a Yamcha fan, this should already be in your hands!
