DeMatteis Other Creators: various illustraters/letterers Grade: 5 I was vaguely aware of a series that has the famed characters from the Scooby-Doo franchise in some apocalyptic setting, but didn't realize it they were collected in trade paperbacks until I saw the fourth volume on the shelf.
This is indeed Fred, Velma, Shaggy, Daphne, and Scooby Doo with the mystery machine traveling around a post-apocalyptic society infested by zombies. The characters all look slightly different, but still recognizable. Their characterizations are roughly the same, but in this setting, Daphne is considerably more tough and smart than her typical depictions the cartoon and live-action adaptations.
Once the novelty of seeing a somewhat cybernetic Scooby wears off, there really isn't much else to recommend with this series. These iconic characters don't have a lot of depths to be mined and even having them interact with new, original, characters doesn't improve things.
The plots themselves aren't any deeper as there are two separate arcs: one where they find an apparently untainted colony, with the hidden secret and the gang trying to establish themselves in a zombie-infested shopping mall. Neither setting brings anything new to the table and by the end of this volume I lost interest in them as well as the premise.
Zoinks! A somewhat unsatisfactory Scooby snack of series.
