I like Norse mythology and dragons, so this was definitely a comic I had to pick up. The first issue does not disappoint. We get a touch of history, an understanding of the family dynamic that has shaped Sigurd. And we get a fantastic fight scene of Viking versus dragon. And not just any dragon, but Fafnir! It's impressive. Sigurd is daring and pays attention to details (though I wouldn't say clever). Both of these aspects are just as needed as his physical skill in battle, which had me worried after his clumsiness upon reaching Fafnir. Fafnir points out some of his previous injuries, which Sigurd takes advantage of ... but it causes me to realize that Sigurd got off easy fighting a dragon tired and wounded from centuries of fighting.
The art is wonderful, vibrant, and realistic. The dragon certainly steals the scenes, but Sigurd is not lost on the page. The battle is dynamic, really playing up that one of the fighters is a fire-breathing, flying dragon. Fafnir's pose when dealt the killing blow is a touch cartoonish, but it seems to be done to fit on one page.
This issue works great as a one-shot; it's worth reading just for this single battle. Knowing there's three more issues, that follow Sigurd, does have me curious to see how Fafnir's blood affects him (as the title suggests).
