Credits Writer: David Pepose Penciler: Gavin Guidry Inker: Gavin Guidry Colorist: Liz Kramer Letterer: Ariana Maher and Colin Bell Cover Artist: Lisa Sterle Grade: 7 Emily's wedding and the multi-million-dollar necklace she'll be wearing are the news highlight of the day, but she's having cold feet. During the "I do"s, four armed Elvis impersonators show up to rob everyone. Emily's necklace disappears, so one robber takes her to the back to look for it, but when he removes his mask, there's more than jewels on both their minds!
I enjoyed this issue. It's not my thing, but it's well done and I'm curious to see where it's going. I don't generally care for wedding stories or robbery stories, but something about the combination piqued my interest. I like that the main character is the woman. It focuses on her feelings in general, but centers on her being the one with cold feet. It's an unusual viewpoint for a wedding story, but that's only the beginning here. Her reaction to getting robbed is telling, and her reaction to the reveal of the one robber is shocking in a way that opens up a whole box of trouble. And that's before getting to the point that this series says it's going to get to: her running both sides during the heist.
So, rom-com meets action-heist. It's a clever combo on its own, but having the robbers dress as Elvis impersonators is hilariously random, especially with their code names. I also like that it's presenting an interracial marriage, just because. The grandma is my favorite character, with her attitude (and knowing she was in Nam); how she calls for help when the heist happens is perfect and funny at the same time. The art is nice, with good coloring as well.
