Illustrator: Grade: 10 David Ewalt is an award-winning journalist who writes about and talks about games in a variety of media. In Of Dice and Men he writes about his own love of playing Dungeons & Dragons, while also giving a history about the game itself.
I absolutely loved this book. While I was already familiar with some of the history behind D&D and how the game works, I learned a lot more and in the best way possible: through someone who loves it.
Ewalt made everything so accessible and easy to understand and entertaining. The book alternates chapters between David describing how he fell in love with the game, and talking about the history of gaming itself through the trials and tribulations of the creators of D&D and the company that made it.
What I also enjoyed about this book is that Ewalt describes the powerful effect of D&D had on the lives of so many people and how much it helped them. He also talks about overcoming the stigma (that still kind of persists) about the so-called "evils" of the game and the type of people who play it. We see that game loved and played by folks all over the world and I see why that is.
I would recommend this book to just about anyone; it is that fun and interesting to read.
