A woman, Ellie Prendick, washes ashore on an island after a violent shipwreck. She's cared for, but things are weird. She meets and is welcomed by the creatures created by the doctor.

It's been a long while since I read or saw an adaptation of this H.G. Wells classic. It's not my favorite, but I was curious, especially since this comic replaces the shipwrecked man with a woman, who is also a biologist.

The opening of the story progresses much how I expected, except that Ellie's shipwreck seems to have been more than just a storm and Montgomery makes a drunken pass at Ellie. The former point intrigues me. What happened on that boat? How will it be relevant to this story? The latter point gives me pause for the rest of the series -- a pause at the potential ramifications of having a woman on this island.

The art is very well done, especially for the human-animal-hybrids and the flashback shipwreck scenes where action and detail are needed.

This first issue also covers quite a bit of ground. It works well as an introduction; I just hope the rest of the story isn't glossed over as quickly, else it would seem to defeat the point of doing an adaptation.
