ISBN: 978-1-9747-0388-3 Grade: 9 Seth completes his special training in the Sidh. Ocoho takes over the Gysoni in order to stop the Nemesis echoes. Ocoho's infection is revealed, as well as how it was being used by others in the larger sinister plot. Lords from all over Cyfander are gathering to choose Wizard Knights, but some are plotting with the Inquisitors for higher stakes.
I love the heart in Seth's training. It's about becoming more in tune with nature, which is wonderfully refreshing. The surprise bonus that he's helping by using fantasia to grow things is truly wonderful, and I love how it highlights his caring nature. It's beautiful and sweet, but it's also powerful. Seth learns how to control the "monitor", so that he can remain in control of himself at all times, though he has a new accessory that helps, leaving me wondering when he'll grow beyond the need for that accessory (or the consequences if it's removed!). That being said, I like and appreciate the reason for it.
I love seeing Ocoho shine, good and bad. She is able to recognize the true extent of the Nemesis threat during the attack in this volume. She shows off some serious skills as well, including how she can see through her dragon's eyes! I appreciate that she has to accept a harsh truth with regards to the Gysoni in order to use it; it's something that I'm sure will have ramifications or at least spur discussion later. And the way she uses it is masterful! Even better than the guy who normally does it. Later, we get to see a higher level of her hand-to-hand combat, and thankfully Seth has increased his own skills, making him capable of dealing with her, though I like the group effort needed to fight her as well. It's quite an impressive fight scene. Her infection is an unexpected twist that reveals much while also building on the mystery.
Things are revealed in this issue indicating that the plot runs deeper than our heroes imagined. I'm not wholly surprised, but I am curious as to the whys. Coupling it with a sort of Seth doppelganger is intriguing and adds a definite layer of mystery to things.
The Inquisition and the slimy lords they ally with certainly make for villains we can enjoy hating. It also creates a massive cliffhanger of danger, as if there wasn't enough of that already.
This volume really shines with each action-packed panel; it has a real energy that is thrilling to read. But it also has heart in a pleasantly surprising way. And danger and mystery. Seriously, what's not to love?
