Golden Kamuy is slowly winding to a close, and nearly all of the skins have either been copied, forged, or collected. It is a grisly business which, disturbingly enough, our characters seem to have gotten quite used to. This book may need a final body count as a stat at the end.

There is all sorts of odd stuff going on in this volume. Asirpa and Sugimoto start it off right by hunting Dr. Anehata, who in his own perverse way, is hunting a bear. Remember that guy from a few volumes ago? Do not worry; he will not disappoint you in this one. You also get blind bandits who may be ninjas and a really creepy guy in a prison. Oh yeah, I almost forgot a plague of locusts!

A lot of this volume covers possibilities of who Asirpa's father is. It narrows down to Noppera-bo the prisoner doing the tattoos who does not seem like a likely candidate and Uiruku. It seems like Asirpa does not really care much at this point who her father really is as she has developed a trusting relationship with Sugimoto who is more partner than father, but still represents an older role model in her life. Asirpa also is aware that she still has her grandmother Hicu and her whole Ainu family behind her everywhere she goes.

This volume also dives a little deeper into the relationship that Asirpa and Sugimoto have. They may have a decent sized age gap between them but there are a few scenes that show the massive amount of respect the two of them have for each other and for each other's tactical abilities. These scenes are interesting as a lot of that kind of stuff does not normally happen in manga - it usually just turns into out of place romance.

The main story within this volume is the motley crew's journey to the prison to get one of the final pieces of the puzzle. They do not know what awaits them there, but after all that they have been through they can fight anything as long as they are together as a team. I will miss these characters when this series comes to a close, but will not miss the ghastliness of what they have to do to get the map.
