Credits Writer: Nick Bermel Penciler: Jason Muhr Inker: Jason Muhr Colorist: Maxflan Arauio Letterer: Kurt Hathaway Cover Artist: Sean Chen and Ivan Nunes Grade: 6 Ivan's powers are inhuman! Freya fights Ivan and basically loses. So does Sigurd, but he finally gives in to the voice inside ....
Admittedly, it took me longer to get to this fourth and final issue than normal, but it throws in too much new stuff for the end. Ivan and Freya are teased to be something more than they appeared, but no real answers on that are provided. It's uncertain if Ivan is telling the truth, and if he is, what it means with regard to them and their fight. It seems like what Ivan says should be true, but then why aren't they stronger / more powerful. Even with their powers, it doesn't quite fit.
I'm sorely disappointed with how easily Freya was defeated, though I can appreciate that she underestimated her enemy, who came prepared with new inhuman powers. Ivan's powers remind me more of reading superhero / mutant comics, so, much like his outfit, it seems he really doesn't belong in this story. At least we get to see Freya genuinely fight, and it's not a bad scene, especially with Ivan's strange abilities.
Sigurd is surprisingly stop-and-go in this issue. He's struggling with the voice inside, and ultimately gives in without realizing it. It makes for a powerful end climax scene and brings a part of this story full circle. However, I didn't care for his wanting to lay down and die rather than fight, and I can't help wishing he worked more with this internal voice rather than trying to control it and fight it (I'm not saying it would have worked, but he didn't even consider it).
The opening scenes are lighthearted, which is not bad amidst all the fighting, but it's an oddly intimate interaction between Freya and Sigurd. Her clothing changes seem odd and / or for the reader's sake. I don't really mind the changes, especially since the first outfit looked partially painted on (how else do you explain it fitting like that?).
The fires in a few scenes are wonderfully colored -- they look so real and vibrant on the page!
In the end, I'm left with more questions than answers on pretty much every front. Then, Sigurd disappears and heads to Yggdrasil for some reason (as a cliffhanger), and Freya's right hand man is telling this story like it's a legend already .... I was really enjoying this series, but this ending is rushed and crammed too full.
