Mettler, Jose Luis Rio, Valentina Pinto Cover Artist: Angel Hernandez Grade: 8 I am a huge fan of Discovery, and I was not looking forward to a lengthy wait for the next season, so having the story continued via comics was very welcome. This short series focuses on some of those left behind after Discovery is lost, including L'Rell, Pike, and Spock, from the main / recurring cast.
Without getting into any spoilers, this story covers the time right after Discovery disappears. We get a bit of context on what's going on with the Klingons as well as Pike's communication with L'Rell, while Spock wrestles with the idea of returning to Enterprise, and with losing Michael. It feels a little rushed, like it could have used another three issues, but given how liberally flashbacks and time travel are used in the TV series, they may be planning to revisit some of these events.
The artwork is great, and captures the characters faithfully, while the use of color is subtly beautiful. The dialogue also rings true, especially Pike's. Focusing on these characters was a smart move for a few reasons. The writers avoid spoilers for Discovery, Season 3. It was due to return sometime in late 2020, but post-production has been slowed by everyone having to work remotely. So maybe more comic books will be offered in the meantime -- plenty of this story was left open. Finally, this mini-series also sets us up for the newly announced Star Trek show about Pike's stint on the Enterprise.
This TPB is essential for fans of the show, and a pleasure all on its own. My only complaint is the compressed story; I wanted more.
