After Toma's leg was broken rescuing Taichi, Taichi spirals into depression, blaming himself for the loss of Toma's baseball dream. Futaba struggles to understand her feelings towards both boys. Meanwhile, Mami makes a nuisance of herself, going after Taichi, and another girl is disparaging towards Futaba. Also, we get some more flashbacks of Taichi and Toma's early friendship, and learn a bit about Toma's tragic past.

I'm kind of annoyed that Mami got a scene of her own. I can do without that kind of character or storyline.

To be honest, I could probably live without Futaba's inclusion too, but I don't mind her. Really, I appreciate Futaba's struggle, even as I would rather she either just be friends with both boys, and end up with Masumi (or else see her be in a poly relationship with both Masumi and Taichi, and Taichi with both Futaba and Toma). Poor Masumi and Taichi -- I know exactly how they feel, playing support to someone they have feelings for, who has feelings for someone else. I'm proud of them both for being so selflessly supportive! And poor Futaba for finding herself in such an awkward situation now!

I reeeeally loved Taichi's angst, his guilt and sense of worthlessness! There are some beautiful scenes regarding it with Toma, with Futaba, and with Toma's older brother, Seita (that one's actually my fave). There's even a little blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment where another student gives Taichi a sympathetic shoulder pat, and another scene where one of Toma's teammates defends Taichi. Really, I wish there had been even more of that. In the meantime, I enjoyed a sweet moment later in the volume between Taichi and Toma -- especially considering how much effort Toma put into them getting to spend time together. Honestly, their story -- especially Taichi's side of it -- would be just as good if there was no romance plot -- a fact which actually serves to make their potential romancer all the better!
