Kate is a former veterinarian turned New York housewife, who has just been dumped by her husband the same day she sends their son off to college. She decides to continue on the African Safari trip she had originally booked as a second honeymoon and meets Derek, bush pilot who also works at an Elephant Preserve. Naturally, they get off to a rocky start, but as with a holiday movies, romance happens.

After starting and bailing on a couple other holiday romantic movies, I saw Rob Lowe in it, so I thought this movie had a chance of being watchable, and it is. I very much appreciated a romantic movie featuring couple with ages north of 30. And it has typical trappings of other such movies, as a couple clashing initially, before getting to know each other, to obstacles and misunderstandings and eventually coming to the final kiss.

While the actress Kristin Davis was believable and beautiful, I had more eyes for Rob Lowe, who does quite well as the standoffish and snarky bush pilot, but who also is clearly caring. The Elephant angle to this is very unusual but works quite well, as Kate falls in love with the elephants as much as she does Derek and their mutual desire to help elephants is as heartwarming as seeing Kate and Derek slowly build trust in each other, as both have experienced loss of a partner.

A rare movie with meaning and a message that doesn't hit you over the hammer.
