Credits Writer: LJ Phillips Penciler: Andi Fikri Letterer: LJ Phillips Grade: 7 The comic opens with Jodi, an artist, waking up from a nightmare. Jodi gets up to feed a dog, who she is apparently taking care of for someone else. Jodi isn't happy about this, and appears to be having some emotional problems.
Jodi goes to a beach to draw the people there; she gets punched out by a jealous husband who thinks Jodi is attracted to his wife. Jodi comes to later and disoriented, afraid and seeing scribbles on people's faces, barely manages to make it back home. Only to face the yipping dog, and breaks down further.
The things I liked about this comic are the straightforward way it presents the story, through words, the panel arrangements, and the artwork. And yet, this doesn't look like it is going to be a simple story. One thing I felt coming straight off the pages is dread and distress. Everything conveys it quite effectively. I also found Jodi's interactions with a woman who tries to help her to be very sensitive and sympathetic.
The part that didn't work for me is that at one point, Jodi is running through a crowd and we see some literal stick figures, which came across as too cartoony or out of place. It took me right out of the story for a sec. Another part, and I am not certain it was intentional or not, but I wasn't quite clear on Jodi's gender initially. Not that it made any difference storywise, just something I wasn't sure of.
Aside from those minor quibbles, this is a strong first issue.
