ISBN: 9781974720163 Grade: 7 Freya and her people at Fort Leren are saved by the 11th-hour arrival of the Kelds, a mysterious group wearing animal skulls -- and accompanied by Alek! Later, Freya deals with a corrupt council, then goes to meet the king. Can she really pass herself off as Edvard to people who are supposed to know him well?
I'm very intrigued by the Kelds and Alek's return -- it seems the series is going to introduce a magical and /or mystical element now, which is fine by me. In the meantime, the beginning was a little dull. Further, I'm frustrated by the fact that we're introduced to a compelling scenario involving Edvard's backstory and another character ... only for that story to end abruptly, without much struggle. How anti-climactic!
And as usual, the manga-ka seems to have a thing for violence (particularly people losing arms), but doesn't seem to care about physics.
Also, the political situation seems rather muddled -- other countries won't help, and have been captured by the enemy, but a jewel is supposed to convince them otherwise? What exactly are they supposed to do while under occupation?
On the upside, I continue to enjoy the occasional homoerotic suggestions this series is prone to. And I am very intrigued by the king, whose situation is heartbreaking! I'm kind of disappointed that the story is moving on to a new arc already, but it does sound like it will be interesting!
