Credits Writer: Conor McCreery Penciler: VV Glass Inker: VV Glass Colorist: Natalia Nesterenko Letterer: Jim Campbell Cover Artist: VV Glass Grade: 9 Saoirse, Nan, and Brahm are travelling, looking for Badb, the wind witch. They run into trouble when Nan is seen using her green witch powers to make their dinner a little better. They are rescued by Hugh, a faerie, who says he wants to help keep the faerie king locked away. When he touches Saoirse, her powers flare!
The pacing here is good. Things have been hitting hard and fast, so it's feels like it should take some time to find the next witch. Saoirse needs training, and the past events are still weighing heavy on them all. It's nice to see them having everyday troubles on the road. Having the run into those who fear / hate witches shows us just how troubled people are. And while that makes Nan wary, I'm glad it doesn't dissuade Saoirse from wanting to help everyone she meets.
Hugh is a fun character. He's playful and seemingly knowledgeable about the history related to the faerie king. His being half-elf adds a sense of genuineness to his desire to help. What happens when he touches Saoirse is shocking, but helpful, and the way he pulls back to only touch her a little is funny. He also knows just how to bond with Brahm, which is so cute. But the cliffhanger has us wondering if he's a dangerous trickster character!
I love the visuals for his argument with Saoirse about whether or not she's a witch; it's unusual and somewhat playful, which is fitting. The scene adds some humor and shows that Saoirse still needs training with her new water powers. I love how Nan stays out of it till she surprises Hugh by catching him in a binding circle. Again, the visual is hilarious. And I love all of Saoirse's super-serious expressions, especially with her heavy, dark eyebrows.
Wonderful art! It's expressive and dynamic in a way that complements and amps up the story and characters. I loved flipping through this issue extra times just for the art and the visual humor.
This is such a fantastic series; I really hope you're reading it.
