This book not only introduces a new and important character, Takeyoshi Waseda, whose soul is trapped within a giant rooster doll, but this story also gives some very interesting insight into the past of the mad prince Seeu. When Waseda arrived on the second world, Asu, he was adopted and fit in quite well, using his intelligence to help their scientists develop a doll that could house a human soul. The ruler of the Asu was Seeu, but he was born and raised in isolation — protected in his palace from the disease that was killing his world and people. Hence the reason for creating dolls with souls. Seeu and Waseda are the only survivors, both due to the living weapon, the Lunato Mercury — Waseda in the doll, and Seeu the master of the scythe.

I was completely fascinated by the way Narushima crafted this part of the story. The rooster is ingenious! — and adds a bit of humor to a serious part of the story. The story of Asu and Seeu is very tragic, but it explains so much. Oddly, somewhere in the translation between book 2 and 3 one of the character's names changed — Sheena becomes Shiina with no explanation given. That really irked me at first, but Shiina does seem to fit her ... I would just have liked a little note as to why they changed it. The artwork is excellent, and after this book, there is no way to say that the characters aren't developing. Planet Ladder is a masterful tale of multi-dimensional destiny! And that is something not to be missed.
