Translator: Grade: 9 Colorful! is definitely that. The myriad of vignettes within its 16 parts provides a hilarious perspective of how guys see the world. Yes, it has sports; yes, it has food; but most importantly it has panties — lots and lots and lots of panties. Think it sounds too good to be true? Well, it's true all right, and it's got plenty more where that came from! And to tie it all together are some central characters that appear throughout: two very horny college guys, their hot-as-hell professor, a TV reporter, a track star, her all-to-tempted coach, and Steve, the transfer student/"filmmaker".
This is sexy with out the sex — it's no hentai, but it is for mature audiences. For the guys out there, this has plenty of eye candy, and you'll laugh at how truthfully it portrays your fellow guys (never you of course, just your buds). For all the girls out there, you will laugh yourselves silly at the shinanigans these guys pull just to get a peak of panties and how they react to the slightist hint of a glimpse — mostly because it's all true. If you want to know what a guy's thinking, watch Colorful!.
Colorful! epitomizes fan-service while drawing the line at just the right point. It's amazingly well-done, zany to the extreme, and outrageously fun! The style is off-the-wall with a fair amount of repetition of scenes that seem to have no point but at the same time add to the deranged experience rather than become annoying. You also come to love the characters — drool, perversion, and obsession included, without which there wouldn't really be a show.
It seems the cast and crew had a little fun making this too. ADV Films provides a live-action extra about the process that brought Colorful! to life. This extra will have you laughing as much as the anime itself. Both the Japanese and English versions are equally well done. I actually watched both versions in their entirety in one sitting — it was that good — of course with at least half the "dialogue" being more sound than words ... but that's another point.
This anime treds where few have dared to contemplate — the inner-workings of (horny) guys minds. And just in case all the panties aren't enough to make you turn it on, just remember that it's ridiculously silly fun. If you liked Golden Boy and/or Excel Saga you're going to get a kick out of Colorful!, but Colorful! also stands on its own — pink panties and all!
