Beware the Creeper is an intriguing supernatural mystery set in 1920's Paris. The first issue introduces several characters and plot threads. Somebody (something?) is brutally assaulting women. Inspector Allain heads the investigation. Allain also has a romantic relationship with Judith, a painter who has been having strange dreams. Judith also has a twin sister, Maddy, who writes plays. Both are acquainted with Mathieu Arbogast, a rich playboy and would be artist.

Somehow these people, the dreams, and the assaults have a connection.

Jason Hall does an admirable job of introducing all of the characters and laying out all of he plot threads in this issue. However, since this issue is all about set up and nothing is resolved, it's not entirely satisfying as a read. It's one of the trade offs a writer can choose to make: hit the ground running, or reel out the plot points. Hall chooses the former.

Cliff Chiang's art is smashing! Simple, bold and graceful lines and a slightly modernist style reminscent of advertising art of the times really set the mood. He has a real knack for showing facial expressions and movement. I'm surprised I haven't seen more work by him. His art is unique and refreshing.

Colorist Dave Stewart also does a wonderful job with his colors. The book is as bright and colorful as the Roaring '20s. Several of the pages have a very nice, deftly handled painterly effect to them. And, although it sounds kind of goofy to say so, he really knows how to color hair to make it look sleek and shiny.

Beware The Creeper #1 is a solid kick-start to what promises to be a very clever series.
