Translator: Grade: 7 In the future some college students have "living" computers called Persocoms to help with work. A Persocom can be programmed and designed to look like toys, animals, or, even, people. Hideki can't afford one, and is pretty crushed about being one of the only students without his own Persocom. His disappointment doesn't last long as he soon finds a used one that is a lot more than meets the eye. The first time Hideki used his Persocom, Chi, it was a standard operating procedure with nothing spectacular or outrageous happening. However, the second time Chi is booted up, the computer became a lot more than just a machine. It took on a life of its own ... leaving Hideki with a mystery to solve and classes to pass.
When I first heard about Chobits, I couldn't help but think it was going to be a little like I Dream of Jeannie or Oh! My Goddess!, but was pleasantly surprised to see it's not exactly what I thought. More like Short Circuit meets both those series than a straight mirror of any singular one. Hideki reminded me a lot of Keitaro from Love Hina. It will be interesting to see how he changes as the series progresses. Chi herself was quite a lot of fun and very much like the innocent Jeannie or kind Belldandy. However like Johnny-Five from Short Circuit, she's also pretty eager to learn about the world around her.
Chobits was just as much fun and provided just as much enjoyment as I'd been led to believe from my friends who've seen the series. It's light, entertaining, and a fun series to check out. If you are a fan of I Dream of Jeannie or Oh! My Goddess!, then I think you'll really enjoy this. The first DVD contained four episodes and, like a lot of the Pioneer anime, several bonuses including a reversible cover. I really like when you can change the covers from one with text all over it to just a beautiful interior image. After the first entertaining volume, I can't wait to see what happens next!
