Translator: Grade: 9 Go Nagai's The Devil Lady grabbed me from the very beginning. This second DVD was just as thrilling, if not moreso, than the first. Go Nagai plays up every aspect of horror, not just the monsters. The episode where one monster is keeping an on Jun is truly creepy as you feel the anxiety as it builds in Jun. And the Devil Man she meets is the kind of character you distrust from the beginning and thus, love to hate. Jun is really having to decide who she is and who she wants to become — for herself and not for anyone else. But will she be strong enough to keep her humanity?
The art especially that of the monsters is great; it is both frightening and realistic. I find it interesting that it sometimes seems like they treat Jun as a science experiment in practically every way except physical dissection ... but of course that comes after she's defeated right? I did however, like that they began to talk about the Giga effect, and hopefully that oddity (which adds a lot to the fight scenes) will be explained scientifically especially since that effect is used in many anime and live-action series. It really is a great effect.
Jun is a supermodel so the sexual overtones are always there in some way, but this volume really plays them up. First another woman model who thinks Jun would make the purrfect bondage lover. Then a stalker who's got eyes for her. And finally, her fellow Devil Man who (as a scientist of course) would love to study her. These overtones combined with the graphic violence of Jun's battles makes this DVD for a mature audience.
The story is suspenseful and just scary enough to keep you glued to the screne. The Devil Lady is one horror anime that any fan of the genre should not miss!
