ISBN: 1-59182-314-5 Grade: 10 A class of 42 students is abducted at random to be the newest stars on "The Program". Only one can survive, and to do so he or she must kill everyone else. Failure for anyone to die within 24 hours results in everyone being blown up by the collars they've been equiped with. Battle Royale has a sense of being a twisted cross between Lord of the Flies and Running Man putting kids on an island with no way off except to kill everyone else ... and televising the whole thing. Kiss your morals good-bye and hang on tight for this controversial and violent manga.
"Kill or be killed" is the only motto to live by once you're on "The Program". Shuuya hopes he can figure another way out ... he also hope that he will find others he can trust. The whole concept behind Battle Royale is unbelievable the story is cruel, violent, and bloody. The shock and fear conveyed by the students is very realistic, as are the reactions both rejecting and accepting the situation. The art is exceptional each character has their own distinct look as well as personality, and the emotions are clearly visible which helps the reader feel them.
Battle Royale is one action manga you'll never forget. Whether you love it's sadistic plot or find it repulsive, it will stick with you which means it is just that well done. Read it and see why it has such a large following; this manga will make you think twice about supporting "reality TV".
