Translator: Grade: 9 Go Nagai is a powerful story teller. The Devil Lady will thrill you, scare you, and entice you with bloody tale of a Devil (wo)Man hunting down beasts while clinging to the last scraps of her humanity. Jun is trying to come to terms with what she is and what she must do. She knows she is still partially human, and she attempts to save some other beasts by reasoning with their dwindling humanity. This fails every time, but Jun's humanity also allows her to hope — she must hope because she herself is part beast.
Every time I stick a DVD of The Devil Lady in my DVD player, I get excited. This has quickly become one of my favorite series. I love the dark opratic opening music and the opening with it's symbolism ... I love it so much I watch the opening every time. The anime itself is excellently directed and animated. Little nuiances like glances are used to make the characters' emotions and thoughts come through. The way Jun's "real life" intertwines with her beast life makes the story as a whole believable in such a way that the viewer identifies with Jun and becomes emotionally tied to the story.
The Giga effect as well as the beasts themselves were discussed more in this DVD. The episode featuring a child beast is disturbing, but does provide an unusual bit of insight into beasts. And, I must admit, I felt a little rush of gladness when it's revealed that while Jun can use the Giga effect, not all Devil Men can ... glad partially because of who can't use it.
If you love horror or are just a sucker for bloody and suspenseful action then you shouldn't miss out on Go Nagai's The Devil Lady.
