ISBN: 1-59116-026-X Grade: 9 The epic Phoenix saga was Osamu Tezuka's self-proclaimed "life's work". It is also considered to be one of the finest manga ever created, and it was certainly revolutionary for the medium. Phoenix: A Tale of the Future is a translation of the second Phoenix story (there are twelve total). Nearly 300 pages long, this one story is an epic unto itself. It is a tale of the future a future in which mankind destroys itself and the earth itself is dying. Class II Space Patrolman Masato's undying love for Tamami an alien "moopie" is meshed with the fate of the world and his own fate, and the Phoenix bestows immortality on him because it has hope.
This story is amazing! The philosophical thoughts about creation, life, and the macroverse are unbelievable while telling it in a way the average reader can follow. Phoenix: A Tale of the Future is a work of genius with artistic and storytelling techniques well ahead of their time. The art is simple, but not simplistic; it is powerful conveying action and emotion beautifully. It is a tragic story that still conveys hope. This story is far beyond the scope of the average manga — it is an epic you can't help but love completely.
