Credits Creators: Jamaica Dyer Grade: 7 As more and more Tarts go from writing about comics to creating comics, it becomes harder and harder for reviewers such as myself to give you readers an objective review. As someone who writes a comic myself, I can understand how important reviews are to comic book creators and how much of themselves they put into their work. As a reviewer, though, I also understand the hesitation one might have in reviewing an acquaintance's comic. I mean, who wants to deal with the potential of that person's hurt feelings?
Fortunately for me, Jamaica Dyer is a young talent whose work has a unique look and creative voice of its very own. I've always liked Jamaica as a person and as an artist. Her funky gothy style is tres hip. What's more, the girl can write. Yes, she's young, yes, she's inexperienced, but what potential lies in the pages of this xeroxed comic!
The set up is sort of future punk without being cyberpunk. In the near future, the world's been bombed to rubble. Entering into this world is a sheltered young woman who looks to be fresh meat for those who enjoy making a meal of some bright eyed kid. The question becomes, can this girl survive with her ideals intact? Can she survive at all?
While I could find some things to niggle about, such as the lettering not transferring that well in xeroxed form, this rather dark story actually made me feel good, as I now see that there's a new generation of young female comic book creators out there that are going to be part of a revolution in changing how people perceive female comic book creators. I'm doing my part with my comic Gun Street Girl. But, boy oh boy, it's nice to see that talented young women like Jamaica Dyer are ready, willing, and more than able to take up the torch and run the good race.
The comic costs $5.00 and can be obtained by e-mailing Jamaica at nottheisland@yahoo.com.
