ISBN: 1-59182-314-5 Grade: 9 Battle Royale is probably the most controversial comic TOKYOPOP has ever published.
It is also one of the better ones.
If you're a fan of manga and anime, you've probably already heard of this violent, exploitive, yet exceedingly compelling comic. It's a gigantic hit in Japan. I predict it will be a cult hit in America, too. The set up is Lord of the Flies meets the classic suspense story The Most Dangerous Game. Battle Royale tells the story of a near-future where teenagers are picked via a lottery to compete on the ultimate reality program: one where they're taken to a remote island with no way off and told that they must kill or be killed until only one remains.
If you're thinking that the story is just action adventure, you're wrong. This is horror, plain and simple. It's visceral, primordial stuff, with blood, guts, paranoia, fear, and disgust at the depths humankind can sink when it's desperate.
After reading 10 pages of the work, I knew I would immediately buy the rest of the series.
