ISBN: 1-59182-156-8 Grade: 7 Volume three begins by finalizing the flashback of how Eclipse found Raenef. Then, an outspoken (and very spoiled) little girl (Leeche) goes to the Demon Palace in place of the offering-bride where she creates many the amusing scene for the reader until her father comes to get her. Everyone mistakes Eclipse for the demon lord, with not one person guessing Raenef. Eclipse then goes to the Rased Cleric who raised Chris and learns about Chris's past and about the power of the god Rased dwelling within him. It seems both Chris and Raenef's futures are bound together due to the supernatural powers/beings that have "chosen" them. And did Raenef somehow get betrothed to Leeche? If Leeche has anything to say about it he did, but no one else is thrilled (and Raenef appears to be suffering nightmares now...).
The artwork, as it has been from the start, is gorgeous. Kara has some real talent. This volume in particular uses a variety of exaggerated facial expressions which is good in that much of the humor here is visual — especially when it comes to Chris getting picked on my Leeche. I think my favorite expression however is Raenef's theif boss's when Raenef bites the guard's hand. It's priceless!
The story is taking quite a while to get going though. Most of the first three volumes has been spent talking about the past, introducing characters, and generally setting up the story nearly three volumes spent entirely on that and not on story development! However, it is becoming more interesting now that Chris's history has been revealed. I don't really want to see more of Leeche, but I have a feeling she'll show up again. What I would love is some action. Any action at all! Something with magic or swords or even some blood (other than the 2 little parts of flashbacks) and the arguing between everyone. These are demons!! So why isn't there a little more violence!? I know it's supposed to be a fun story (and it is) about a demon lord that couldn't be evil if his life depended on it (and it might), but really, can there not be a little more angst (other than Eclipse suffering from all of the goings on in the palace)?
Demon Diary takes a while to get into, but it's definitely worth a read. This volume in particular is very humorous. At any rate, it has wonderful eye candy!
