Credits Artist/Band: Yuki Kajiura Grade: 10 Fiction goes in through your ears, grabs your mind and says "listen to me!" and you do because it's just that good — so good you don't want to turn it off. I have listened to this album over and over and over, and I don't foresee growing tired of it ... ever. All of the songs and musical pieces are composed by Yuki Kajiura. She has a nice list of anime soundtracks she has composed. Some of the pieces on this album are indeed from her soundtracks like Noir and .hack//SIGN.
I have never heard anything so wonderful before. Fiction is a beautiful addiction! Most of the songs are in English with Canta Per Me and Salva Nos being the exceptions. The are all unimaginably beautiful, but the great thing about the English is that I can understand it. The insert provides lyrics so of course I began singing along after a few times of just listening pleasure. Awakening and Zodiacal Sign I'm not sure about. There are no lyrics provided in the insert, but they are definitely singing something which is obviously not English but I don't know if it's nonsense or real as they are the only pieces with "words" that aren't given a spot in the insert. Awakening is a soothing piece with a quiet energy in its sounds, and Zodiacal Sign is almost techno-like in its rhythm and repetition, but it also features strings to keep it refreshing. I would be hard-pressed to pick a favorite song, but I think I would have to go with the quiet piece called Fake Wings that is featured on .hack//SIGN. The lyrics as well as the music are what really make it dark and beautiful while retaining a light innocent quality.
Canta Per Me is done with an almost operatic vocal part. Having only seen one episode thus far of Noir I'm not sure if this version is on the soundtrack or not. I know it's not the version I heard in the first episode, but it's still elegant with a slightly edgy beat. Salva Nos also has an operatic sound to it which really works with whatever language it is (Latin?). It also has a nice "dancy" beat to it. And of course Key of the Twilight (also from .hack//SIGN) is wonderful in its lyrics imagery as well as its sound.
There is no way I know of to properly catagorize this music, and maybe it's not meant to be stuffed into a genre. If you like the music from any of her soundtracks (Eat Man, Blood the Last Vampire, Noir, and .hack//SIGN to name a few), then you're sure to love this album! Whether you're familiar with her work or not Fiction is one album any music lover needs to have. It is eleven tracks of bliss for the ears, mind, and being. Yuki Kajiura I cannot praise you well enough!
