The whole soundtrack has a cotton candy-type sweetness to it — it's light and sugary. I am a huge fan of the Chobits manga, but when I saw the first DVD of the anime, I was a little shocked by the music. The music, as I watched the anime, seemed to silly and light-hearted. However, it does seem to fit with the anime (or at least the approach the anime has taken at portraying the story). As far as a stand-alone soundtrack it makes wonderful background music if you want something nice and pretty to relax, study, etc. to. The first few times it was a little odd heading Chi's voice as the soundtrack uses quotes from the anime at the beginning or ends of songs. It is a different experience hearing it stand-alone versus with the anime though so don't let the anime color your opinion completely till you've heard it by itself.

This soundtrack definitely wont be for everyone. It's pop-ish fluff music with a little jazz flair and nonsense lyrics like "buh bah bah buh" — in fact, those are the only "lyrics" of track four And the World Also Starts Today and many other songs on this soundtrack. Something about it reminded me a bit of 70's sit-com music. I really like men's club which has a slightly darker/heavier edge to it with more jazz influences. It is followed immediately by Portrait of Tenderness which is a soft, soothing piano piece. If you really like soft jazz then you'll like Tedious Scribble which has a really beautiful tenor (I believe ... might be alto) sax solo with little vocal hums as "bah bah"s interspersed — however, the sax is the jazziest thing about that piece so don't go expecting anything really jazzy ... especially if jazz is your thing. Two of Us has a nice almost-French sound to it from the electric piano/sythesizer.

The two real songs are Let Me Be With You and Raison d'etre. Raison d'etre is the most upbeat piece on the CD. I find the whole Chobits soundtrack to be a wonderful addition to my collection. Yes, it's pop-ish, super-sweet, and even a bit silly sounding, but at the same time it's very pretty and nice to have on in the background or any time. Give it a listen and see for yourself.
